The two Jonas' & some school thoughts

Both of my tutors at HDK are called Jonas- which makes for a little confusion sometimes!
Jonas 1. or Carlsson is an architect with a beard who speaks almost entirely in metaphors & Jonas 2. or Friden is a Graphic designer without a beard who studied for his BA in London.

Many things here at HDK are similar to Camberwell, we got given a brief much like at home, and then most of our time is spent individually working on it. We also have small group tutorials here too but unlike at home we stick with the same group throughout the project which is nice - following your groups work from start to finish, we keep a group log which anyone can look at for inspiration and each week we try and add something to the log.

Studio culture here is much stronger, most days everyone is in the studio working, and sometimes not working but still always there. Almost everyone stops together at lunch time and the studio gets very noisy as we all sit for lunch and chats. The studios here have proper kitchens, microwaves fridge&freezer cupboards kettle et all! I think I would like to try and spend more time in our studio when I get back for sure.
I think in part it might be because we're less open at home? or I am? I get a little nervous about people seeing the 'in progress' phase- I always have done. Maybe it's because I'm easily disheartened and don't want people to judge the halfway stage and throw me off course. I usually have a really clear vision of the end and I guess I worry that other people wont be able to imagine it.

I was chatting lots to Tove about it and I think people here are more open with their emotions in regards to their work. Maybe 'we' are scared to be laughed at at home if we bare to much? Here, at least in my tutorial group everyone talks really freely and openly about such things and I think it's really nice. I'm sure we've had lectures at Camberwell or at least talked about emotional design. We're all probably doing it just not talking about it so much.

Also something unexpected here is that design is not split into 3d, Graphics & Illustration like at home- it's all one class. We share studios, ideas and project briefs. I really like having it this way as not only does it make you more free and enable you to work in different ways but it also is nice to be influenced by the other mediums even if you still stick to your preferred.

There are over 40 students in the whole design class split between two wonderful studios and only 4 are boys! We are more girls at home for sure but not as extreme. My studio is the largest of the two and has only girls. I am still struggling a bit to remember everyones names but there are many Anna's so I have at least got those down!
